What is closed
The temporary closure applies to the Metro station at Cais do Sodré while signalling work is carried out for the future Circular line. From 8 to 26 August, the Green line operates between Telheiras and Baixa-Chiado. The stated reopening date is 27 August.
Do not read 'Cais do Sodré closed' as a blanket statement about every transport mode at the interchange. Check the Cascais railway line, ferry terminal and Carris services independently.
The simplest central alternatives
For some journeys, Baixa-Chiado is the most direct point to leave the Green line and continue on foot or by surface transport. Terreiro do Paço on the Blue line can be useful for the eastern side of the riverfront and has connecting bus services toward Cais do Sodré.
Carris has listed alternatives from Martim Moniz, Praça do Comércio, Praça da Figueira, Rossio and Chiado, including daytime and late-night services. A direct-looking bus can still be slower in traffic, so allow a margin.
Rebuild the interchange, not only the metro leg
If the journey includes a Cascais train or ferry, work backwards from that departure. Allow time to reach the correct platform, buy or validate the right ticket and absorb congestion around the interchange.
A navigation app may show the closure with a delay or recommend a transfer that is technically possible but uncomfortable with luggage, a pushchair or reduced mobility. Compare at least two complete routes.
Why the work is happening
The signalling work prepares the network for the future Circular line, planned to connect Rato and Cais do Sodré through new stations at Estrela and Santos. The current closure is a construction-stage disruption, not the opening of the new line.
Check the operator again on the travel day, especially near the scheduled reopening, because engineering programmes can change.
