Archived 12 September 2026This is a multi-year operator plan, not a promise of immediate signal improvement at every address. Residents should check actual coverage and report a persistent local fault with precise location details.
- The programme covers 189 existing mobile-network stations.
- More than 600 capacity expansions are planned across 4G and 5G.
- New stations entered service at Santa Maria Airport and São João on Pico in 2026, with four more announced.
Capacity work is not the same as universal indoor coverage
MEO says the upgrades are distributed across the nine islands and that four additional stations are planned in São Miguel, Santa Maria, Faial and Flores. The reported completion horizon is the end of 2027.
Population coverage statistics do not guarantee the same signal in every valley, building or room. Terrain, construction and network load still affect a particular connection.
Test the service where it matters
Before signing a long contract for a home or business, check operator and ANACOM maps and test the exact location where possible. Remote work should also have a fallback when connectivity is essential.
For a fault report, give the island, parish, address or coordinates, device, date, time and whether voice, data, 4G or 5G failed. That creates a more actionable record than a general complaint about an island.
What you can do now.
- 01
Check the exact address in operator and ANACOM coverage tools.
- 02
Test an essential connection before relying on it for remote work.
- 03
Report repeated faults with precise place, time and service details.
