Update: orange rain warnings are in force across the Azores as Hanna approaches
IPMA has upgraded parts of the Azores to orange for heavy rain as post-tropical Hanna moves through the archipelago.
Archived after its publication day. Search retains this original briefing for background and accountability.
Archived 12 September 2026The warning window differs by island group, and flight, ferry, sea and wind decisions can change separately from the rain warning.
- Orange rain warnings replace yesterday's lower-level forecast for important periods.
- Western and Central islands face the strongest rain overnight and early today.
- The Eastern group remains under the higher warning into today; check the live island forecast.
The forecast strengthened after yesterday's briefing
IPMA's current timeline places the Western and Central groups under orange precipitation warnings overnight and into the morning of 2 October. The Eastern group has an orange period extending further into the day.
The system is expected as a post-tropical depression. The practical risk is intense rain, possible thunderstorms, flooding and disruption—not a claim that a hurricane is making landfall.
Follow the island-level position
Avoid flooded roads, watercourses and exposed coastal areas during severe conditions. Clear drains only where it is safe and secure loose outdoor items before conditions worsen.
Confirm flights and ferries with the operator. IPMA and Azores Civil Protection should replace screenshots or yesterday's forecast when conditions change.
