The Coimbra district fire eased overnight, but crews remain on the ground

Fires that began near Vila Nova de Poiares and Arganil grew into a large operation on Saturday; the latest overnight reporting described a calmer, more stable situation rather than a finished incident.

IN BRIEF

Anyone in Arganil, Góis or Vila Nova de Poiares should keep following local Civil Protection instructions and avoid roads used by emergency vehicles.

  • The Vila Nova de Poiares fire threatened Sabouga before being brought under control.
  • The Arganil operation involved more than 700 personnel after separate outbreaks merged.
  • Two firefighters were reported injured during the response.
  • A calmer overnight position does not remove the risk of reactivation in hot, dry conditions.
01

What changed overnight

The fire near Sabouga, in Vila Nova de Poiares, was brought under control after homes were threatened. The larger Arganil operation developed after outbreaks near Pombeiro da Beira and Vila Nova de Poiares joined, with the response extending towards the Góis area.

Overnight radio updates described the situation as calmer and more stable. That wording matters: it does not mean that every perimeter is extinguished or that roads and woodland are immediately safe to enter.

02

What to do in the affected area

Use instructions from the municipality, Civil Protection, GNR and firefighters for access, evacuation or confinement. Do not travel to see the fire, fly a drone nearby or block narrow roads that crews may need.

If returning to a property, wait for authorised access and watch for hot ground, weakened trees, smoke and damaged utilities. Call 112 if there is immediate danger; use local non-emergency channels for general information.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

What you can do now.

  1. 01

Follow the latest municipal and Civil Protection notices.

  2. 02

    Keep emergency routes clear.

  3. 03

Do not enter burned woodland without authorised access.

  4. 04

Call 112 if life or property is in immediate danger.
