How to find the correct AIMA service for your case
First permits, renewals, permanent residence and family reunification do not all use the same appointment channel. The correct route depends on the service you need.

Archived 31 August 2026Choosing the exact process first prevents applicants from relying on an appointment route that was designed for a different residence matter.
- There is no single appointment method that applies to every AIMA service.
- The permit type, expiry date and stage of the case determine the correct route.
- Permanent-residence requests have their own documented appointment channel and evidence rules.
- A social-media success story is not proof that the same method applies to your case.
Why a general AIMA search can mislead you
People often talk about an “AIMA appointment” as if it were one product with one queue. It is not. A first residence permit, a renewal, permanent residence, family reunification and a correction to an existing file are different administrative matters. The channel that works for one can be irrelevant to another.
Start by naming the legal and administrative outcome. Write down the permit you hold or seek, the expiry date, whether the case already exists, and the last formal communication received. Only then look for the channel published for that situation.
Permanent residence as an example
AIMA's 2026 guidance gives permanent residence its own route. A person seeking the grant or renewal of a permanent residence permit is instructed to request an appointment by email, using the specified subject line, and then wait for AIMA to schedule it.
The document list also changes with the task. A permanent-permit renewal is not described in the same way as a first grant. The first grant can require evidence of financial means, address, compliance with tax and Social Security obligations, and basic Portuguese, while a renewal focuses on the existing permit and a valid passport. Your own case may require further evidence.
Read dates as carefully as instructions
Residence guidance has changed repeatedly, particularly for expired documents and renewal backlogs. An old screenshot can preserve a real instruction that no longer applies. Check the date of the official page, the date your document expired, and the date any notice was sent to you.
Do not assume that a temporary extension means every foreign authority, airline, employer or private business will treat an expired card in the same way. Domestic validity and cross-border travel are different questions. If travel is involved, confirm the position for the journey rather than relying on a residence-process update.
Write down the dates in your case
Keep a short timeline with the application date, permit expiry, payment dates, appointment attempts, reference numbers and communications received. Save original messages and receipts without posting them publicly. A timeline makes a support request clearer and helps a qualified adviser identify what has and has not happened.
When contacting AIMA, use the channel and subject line attached to your exact process. State the outcome needed and the case identifier concisely. Sending the same broad request to multiple unrelated channels can create noise without moving the correct process forward.
When professional help is useful
Professional help is most valuable when the route is legally unclear, a deadline has consequences, documents conflict, or a case has stalled after the correct procedure was followed. The professional should be able to explain their scope, the evidence they need and what they can realistically do.
No professional can honestly guarantee an AIMA appointment or decision. Treat guaranteed access, requests for unnecessary personal data, and pressure to pay without a written scope as warning signs.
What you can do now.
- 01
Name the exact permit and administrative outcome.
- 02
Record expiry, application and communication dates.
- 03
Use the current channel published for that process.
- 04
Escalate with a clear timeline if the correct route has already failed.
