Archived 31 August 2026People nearby should follow local Civil Protection instructions and avoid the smoke and road closure rather than travelling towards the site to inspect conditions.
- Fourteen residents were moved as a precaution because of smoke.
- The N2 was closed near Alferrarede during the response.
- Lithium batteries were among the materials reported burning.
- The operational position can change quickly, so the latest local instruction takes priority over this report.
What was known in the first update
A fire at a recycling business in the Abrantes area produced enough smoke for Civil Protection to move 14 people from nearby homes as a precaution. Traffic on the N2 near Alferrarede was also stopped.
The regional commander told public radio that the fire affected a scrapyard and involved lithium batteries. At that stage the flames were still active but confined to one area of the business.
Why the smoke matters
Smoke from mixed industrial or recycling material should not be treated like an ordinary garden fire. Do not approach to photograph it, and keep windows and ventilation closed if local authorities tell nearby residents to shelter indoors.
People with breathing difficulties, older residents, children and anyone feeling unwell should follow health or emergency advice. Call 112 for an emergency, not for general updates.
Travel around the incident
A road closure can remain after flames are reduced because crews, equipment and contaminated runoff still need space. Use an official diversion and do not assume a navigation app has the latest reopening.
Check the municipality, Civil Protection and road information before travelling through Alferrarede. If authorities have arranged a temporary move, wait for their instruction before returning home.
