Can you use your current licence in Portugal?
Portugal currently recognises a valid Australian licence for driving in Portugal without an immediate exchange, but only while every OECD/CPLP condition below remains true. This recognition applies inside Portugal, not automatically across the rest of the EU.
- The licence is valid and was issued by a country covered by the applicable road-traffic convention or agreement
- No more than 15 years have passed since the licence was issued or last renewed
- You are under 60 years old
- You meet Portugal’s minimum age for the vehicle category
- The licence is not suspended, seized, expired or revoked in Portugal or in the issuing jurisdiction
- Submit the exchange request online through A Minha Carta de Condução
- Provide identification, Portuguese residence and fiscal-address evidence required for your case
- Provide the original foreign licence and an electronic Portuguese medical certificate
- Obtain an authenticity statement from the issuing authority or its consular service confirming the categories and that they were obtained by examination
- For heavy-vehicle categories, include the required psychological certificate
- Wait for IMT instructions before surrendering the physical licence and providing biometrics
