What the symbols mean in everyday English.

These summaries explain the activity categories used by IPMA. They do not replace the municipality-specific result, registration process or an exceptional government alert.

Cut and piled waste burning

Registration is mandatory. Depending on the danger level and season, prior notification or authorisation may be required.

Extensive burning

Authorisation is required. Never start until the official registration process and local conditions permit it.

Barbecue or stove

In rural areas, use only places that are expressly authorised and check the day’s restrictions before lighting anything.

Rockets and lit-fuse balloons

Restrictions tighten at very high and maximum danger. Fireworks require the relevant municipal authorisation.

Machinery and equipment

Very high and maximum danger can restrict agricultural and forestry machinery. Official time-window exceptions may apply.

Apiary fumigation

Spark-retention equipment and the current danger restrictions matter when fire is used for fumigation or disinfestation.

Forest machinery

Check restrictions, required spark arrestors, flame guards and fire extinguishers before work in rural territory.

Recreation bonfire

Do not assume a leisure fire is allowed. Confirm the authorised location, municipal rules and current danger level first.

IPMA’s five-level forecast describes how favourable conditions are for a rural fire to start and spread in each municipality.

Active incident

A high danger level does not mean there is a fire. Check civil-protection notices and local instructions for actual incidents or closures.

What you may do

Activity conditions can change with the danger class, season, municipality and a declared alert situation. Confirm before burning, using fire or operating machinery.

If you see smoke or fire

Move away from danger, follow authority instructions and call 112 with the clearest location you can provide. Do not drive towards smoke, closed roads or emergency vehicles.
